wondering about Version 4

Postby coolrat33 » 10 Jul 2010 18:40

Hi
Its been some time since the release of version 3.
I'm wondering when version 4 might be released--- a major upgrade to the currently excellent v3.
What types of major improvements and features might it have?

My primary wish would be that Admin would consider re-writing it in Python to make it cross platform.
But I guess i'm dreaming too big there :)

There's few note-takers out there as good as this one.
Good luck with work on TreeDB!

I've looked into developing my own PIM because I have YET to find one where I'm totally happy with what it does or how the development of it is handled.

The biggest issue is finding a rich-text component that works similar to what I'm used to.

I've seen controls that cost $1000 or more and they don't handle animated GIFs! I've gotten used to having animated GIFs in my notes since a lot of people screen capture tutorials and small how-tos about application features etc.

The control used in this app is a Delphi component, I'm a C# / .NET programmer so finding a text editor control with matching features for that platform has eluded me so far - I've put in a lot of requests to the control makers, I'll just have to wait and see what happens...

I'm totally saddened that the development for this app seems to have stalled now - it was slowly but surely getting there in my opinion.

Hi
A couple of friends and I were also thinking about writing our own cross-platform note-taker, with a web-clipper as one if its key attractions.
We gave up recently, hoping that several of the projects out there will develop quickly.

I am very impressed with with TreeDBnotes, but its lack of a web-clipper is becoming a serious drawback for me. And the fact that it is likely to never be cross-platform is causing me to think more carefully.

We all look forward to improvements in this useful application!

Well I've used products like NeoDownloader and Webzip in the past to suck up image galleries and similar from websites.

I'll admit it's annoying to select and copy a webpage with images (especially animated gifs) and text to have only the text pasted into your notes when you're done!

What packages do you know of that performs this without errors? I'd be interested to see a couple of them...

Now we are working on advertising, TreeDB help file and some changes.
Sorry, but we have no plans for Python...

Here's a thought.... why not convert the help content into a "treeDB" file format and just compile it to an executable file or something similar. To me that would be an easier way to update the information. The competing product that I use does it that way. [See attached screen shot]

Working to improve existing features is a good idea.
But TreeDB really needs several new features to stay competitive. Other applications have had these features for a long time. Many users have asked for:
1. a web-clipping tool and ability to make notes on clippings from webpages
2. a zoom tool that really does zoom, not just increase the font size.
3. a better highlighting tool. I have posted many times on incredibly awkward the current highlighting tool is. It only needs a few simple improvments.

These improvements are not really asking much. Nor are they particularly innovative in any way. They are just incredibly useful and would significantly improve the usability of TreeDBnotes.

Thanks!

I believe working on the existing features is the only thing that should be done at this point. You must have a solid base to build from. Your not going to expand the user base by having a bloated piece of software that has too many features implemented poorly, there are already numerous programs available that are done that way.

I'm curious to know what other competing packages you are referring to that have a web-clipping tool? Also, what exactly is a zoom tool?

I agree with Enigma66. It's better to work to make the current app better and fix the current issues.

I've been waiting for a long time for the dev to fix the Contact and Password managers columns problem per example, and the more recent non-standard Screen DPI problem. And I'd rather see as a new feature the ability to export in OpenOffice file than a web clipping tool I don't need.

Hi
Zooming is the ability to enlarge the page in a fashion similar to Firefox- the content of any page can be enlarged by pressing CTRL + or CRTL - Implementing a zoom tool for TreeDB has been discussed many times on this forum. Many users of note-taking software request zoom capability for several reasons-

-many users are older and need to be able to increase the size of pages in order to see clearly.
- many people are using netbooks with small screens and the ability to zoom greatly enhances the usablity and convenience of the software. Note-taking applications are extremely well suited to netbooks which have limited ability to run a great number of different programs.

Web clipping tools- many note-taking applications and related research tools have web-clipping tools. Among the prominent ones are:
Evernote
One-Note
MyBase
InfoQube
AM-Notebook
Surfalator
(there are others as well)

Related data and research note-taking tools:
Zotero
Scrapbook plugin for Firefox

There are many tools out there and one of the most common requests for all note-taking tools is to have this web-clipping capability.

So having these 2 functions, zoom and web-clipping, are not extravagent features at all. They are common features in many note-taking tools that many people find essential.
